Vụ nổ hạt nhân dưới nước đầu tiên trên thế giới

Chiến dịch Ngã tư là một chuỗi các cuộc thử vũ khí hạt nhân do Mỹ tiến hành ở đảo san hô vòng Bikini vào giữa năm 1946. Mục đích của nó là nhằm nghiên cứu ảnh hưởng của vũ khí hạt nhân lên các tàu hải quân.

Chiến dịch Ngã tư là vụ thử vũ khí hạt nhân đầu tiên sau vụ thử hạt nhân Trinity của Mỹ hồi tháng 7/1945 và cũng là vụ kích hoạt thiết bị hạt nhân đầu tiên sau vụ kích hoạt hạt nhân Fat Man hôm 9/8/1945. Chiến dịch Ngã tư bao gồm hai lần kích hoạt với hai quả bom: Able và Baker. Đám mây hình nấm và cột nước bốc lên từ vụ nổ hạt nhân Baker hôm 25/7/1946. Crossroads Able, một vũ khí hạt nhân được triển khai trên không có sức công phá 23 kiloton phát nổ hôm 1/7/1946. Quả bom này sử dụng và tiêu thụ lõi Abe nổi tiếng, từng cướp đi sinh mạng của hai nhà khoa học trong hai vụ tai nạn nghiêm trọng riêng biệt.

d The blast lifted two million tons of water and sand into the air, creating a column 6,000 feet tall, 2,000 feet wide, and with walls 300 feet thick. Fifty-seven guinea pigs, 109 mice, 146 pigs, 176 goats, and 3,030 white rats had been placed on 22 nearby target ships in stations normally occupied by people. Vụ nổ bật tung hai triệu tấn nước và cát lên không khí, tạo ra cột nước cao gần 1.830 m, rộng hơn 600 m, dày 91m. 57 con chuột bọ, 109 con chuột, 146 con lợn, 176 con dê và 3.030 con chuột bạch đã bị đưa lên 22 con tàu mục tiêu gần đó để quan sát. 35% số động vật chết vì ảnh hưởng trực tiếp của vụ nổ hay phơi nhiễm phóng xạ.
